British Values
British Values at Our Lady Mother of the Saviour
At Our Lady Mother of the Saviour Catholic Primary School, British Values are not taught in isolation. They are lived out daily through our Gospel-centred ethos, our relationships and the way we learn and work together as a school community.
We actively promote the core British Values of:
- Democracy
- The Rule of Law
- Individual Liberty
- Mutual Respect
- Tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs
These values are closely aligned with our mission statement and are embedded throughout our curriculum, behaviour expectations and wider school life.
Democracy
Pupils are encouraged to have a voice and understand that their views matter.
This is developed through:
- Opportunities for pupils to present ideas and proposals to senior leaders
- Leadership roles such as Head Boy/Girl, Eco Ambassadors and other pupil responsibilities
- Regular pupil voice opportunities within lessons and assemblies
Through these experiences, pupils learn how to express their views respectfully and understand that decisions are made for the benefit of the whole community.
The Rule of Law
Pupils are taught to understand the importance of rules and laws in keeping people safe and ensuring fairness.
In school, this is reflected through:
- Clear and consistent behaviour expectations
- Our school rules and routines
- A focus on reflection, responsibility and consequences
- Collective worship and assemblies that explore right and wrong
This is further supported through visits from external services such as the police and fire service, helping pupils understand how laws operate in wider society.
Mutual Respect
Respect is central to our school community and is rooted in our Gospel Values and behaviour expectations.
Pupils are taught to:
- Treat others with kindness, fairness and consideration
- Listen to and value different opinions
- Work collaboratively and support one another
This is reinforced through our behaviour policy, classroom expectations and daily interactions across the school.
Tolerance of Those with Different Faiths and Beliefs
As a Catholic school, we actively promote understanding, respect and appreciation of different faiths and cultures.
This is developed through:
- Religious Education and collective worship
- Learning about other faiths and traditions, including dedicated focus weeks
- Opportunities to explore diversity through curriculum topics and discussion
Pupils are supported to understand that differences should be respected and valued within a diverse society.
British Values Across Our Curriculum
British Values are woven throughout our curriculum and are not confined to one subject.
For example:
- RSE / PSHE develops understanding of relationships, respect and personal responsibility
- History teaches British history chronologically, including key periods such as the Romans, Anglo-Saxons and World Wars
- Collective worship and assemblies promote reflection on values such as empathy, respect and tolerance, with pupils regularly leading prayer and worship
- Whole-school events such as Remembrance Day, sporting events and themed celebrations provide meaningful real-life context
- Pupil leadership opportunities, including Eco Ambassadors, encourage responsibility, stewardship and active contribution to school life
These experiences help pupils understand how British Values apply in their everyday lives.
Preparing Pupils for Life in Modern Britain
Through our curriculum, behaviour expectations and wider opportunities, we prepare pupils to be:
- Respectful and responsible members of society
- Confident individuals who can express their views
- Thoughtful citizens who understand the importance of fairness, equality and respect
British Values are not separate from who we are as a school. They are part of the way we live, learn and grow together.
