PE Curriculum Intent
Our PE curriculum is designed to ensure that all pupils develop the physical competence, confidence and motivation to enjoy physical activity and lead healthy, active lives. Through PE, pupils are supported to develop fundamental movement skills, apply these in a range of physical activities and experience the physical, social and emotional benefits of being active. The curriculum is carefully sequenced so that pupils build secure physical skills and knowledge over time. Pupils are taught how to move effectively, safely and with control, applying their skills in different contexts such as games, gymnastics, dance and athletics. Key skills are revisited through intelligent repetition to support confidence, fluency and progression.
Strong foundations are established in the early years through the development of fundamental movement skills, coordination and balance, alongside opportunities for active play. As pupils move through the school, they are supported to apply these skills with increasing accuracy, confidence and independence.
Our PE curriculum is ambitious and inclusive, designed to be accessible to all pupils, including those with SEND and those who may face barriers to participation. Pupils are given opportunities to work individually and with others, to challenge themselves appropriately and to experience competition in a supportive and positive way. By the end of primary school, pupils will have developed a secure range of physical skills, the confidence to participate in physical activity and an understanding of the importance of an active and healthy lifestyle.
PE Subject Overview
The PE subject overview shows how key physical skills and knowledge are organised and revisited across each year group to support progression and confidence over time.
How PE is Taught
PE is taught through a carefully sequenced curriculum that builds pupils’ physical skills, confidence and understanding progressively over time. New learning is explicitly linked to prior experiences so that pupils develop increasing control, coordination and confidence in their movement. Lessons provide regular opportunities for pupils to practise and apply fundamental movement skills and to develop these within a range of physical activities, including games, gymnastics, dance and athletics. Pupils are supported to develop physical competence, cooperation and resilience through individual, paired and group activities.
Teaching focuses on clear demonstrations, practice and feedback to help pupils refine their movement and improve performance. Pupils are encouraged to reflect on their own progress and to challenge themselves appropriately in a supportive environment.
In the early years, children develop physical foundations through active play and structured movement experiences, supporting the development of balance, coordination and control. As pupils move through the school, they apply these skills with increasing confidence and independence.
Impact
The impact of our PE curriculum is that pupils develop a secure range of physical skills, increased confidence in movement and a positive attitude towards physical activity. Pupils demonstrate improving coordination, balance and control across a range of physical activities and are able to work independently and with others in supportive and respectful ways. They understand the importance of perseverance, cooperation and personal improvement. By the end of primary school, pupils have the confidence and motivation to participate in physical activity, an understanding of the importance of an active and healthy lifestyle and the skills needed to continue engaging in sport and physical activity beyond school.
Adaptive Teaching
Our PE curriculum is designed to be inclusive and accessible to all pupils, including those with SEND and those who may face barriers to participation. Adaptations are made through high-quality teaching so that all pupils can take part in the same physical activities and experience success. Physical activities are carefully adapted to support pupils’ needs, including simplifying rules, reducing competitive elements where appropriate and adjusting objectives to focus on personal improvement. Equipment and spaces may be adapted to support access, such as using larger or softer equipment, modifying playing areas or providing adapted resources.
Skills are broken down into small, manageable steps and modelled clearly, with opportunities for repetition to support confidence and familiarity. Pupils may be supported through paired work, visual task cards or consistent warm-up routines to help them understand expectations and feel secure. Where needed, pupils are supported through flexible approaches such as rest breaks or opportunities for sensory regulation. These adaptations ensure that all pupils can participate confidently, develop physical skills and enjoy PE.
PE Enrichment
Pupils’ physical education is enriched through a wide range of opportunities that extend learning beyond curriculum lessons and encourage participation, confidence and enjoyment in physical activity. Pupils take part in a variety of competitive and participatory sporting events, including inter-school competitions across a range of sports. These experiences allow pupils to apply their physical skills in different contexts, develop teamwork and resilience, and experience competition in a positive and supportive environment.
Additional enrichment opportunities include residential visits, after-school sports clubs and whole-school events such as Sports Day, Healthy Schools Week and sponsored physical activity events. Pupils also benefit from visits and workshops delivered by external providers, including athlete-led sessions and activities such as scooter and skateboard workshops. Opportunities are provided to promote inclusion and participation for all pupils, including targeted events such as girls’ football activities and links with community and national sporting organisations, including England Netball. These experiences help pupils to develop positive attitudes towards physical activity and encourage lifelong engagement in sport and exercise.
